Introduction

Agreement to Terms

By registering as an editor and using Edit Genius, you agree to comply with and be bound by the following terms and conditions of use for editors, which together with our Privacy Policy govern Edit Genius’s relationship with you in relation to this website.

Definitions

• Copy-editor: The term ‘copy-editor,’ ‘copy-editors,’ ‘editor,’ ‘editors,’ or ‘you’ refers to you as the independent self-employed provider of editorial services to our clients through our website — see section 2 below.
• Client: The term ‘client’ or ‘clients’ refers to the client(s) of our editorial services.
• Content: The term ‘content,’ ‘document,’ ‘text,’ or ‘job’ refers to any written material sent to Edit Genius for editing.
• Work: The term ‘work’ refers to the text that has been edited by you, the editor.
• Editing: The term ‘copy-editing,’ ‘proofreading,’ or ‘editing’ refers to the work done by you.

Terms of Use

Services and Payments

• Description of Services Edit Genius is a real-time service that adds professional, human copy-editing and proofreading to a client’s text. It is essential to us that clients know what to expect, and you know what to deliver.
• Instant Price Quote When sending a document to Edit Genius, clients receive an instant price quote. The quote includes checking and correcting grammar, spelling, punctuation, consistency, and textual structure. All quotes are non-binding.
• Guidelines Editors work from a standardized set of guidelines that describe in detail the process by which all documents are copy-edited — see section 5 below.

Editors’ Employment Status

It is a requirement when registering as a copy-editor with Edit Genius that you are an independent self-employed provider of editorial services. As a registered copy-editor, you will not be employed by Edit Genius but will only acquire work through Edit Genius.

Your Account

• Access and Maintenance You can access all your personal information that we collect online and maintain your account after signing in. Here, you can also modify, add, or remove any of your personal information.
• Account Features Your account is also where you can track your earnings, accept open orders, deliver orders, view order details, and much more.

Payment

• Payment Process When a client completes an order on Edit Genius, the payment is transferred to a dedicated account for holding. Upon your acceptance and subsequent delivery of the order, the payment is credited to your Edit Genius account. Note, the client has three days from the next business day to evaluate, accept, or claim a re-edit. The payment is not credited to you before the client’s acceptance of the job.
• Payment Schedule Edit Genius transfers payments to your account on the second Tuesday of each month. You can see your account balance and modify your banking details in your account.
• Minimum Payment Due to the cost of bank transfers, the minimum amount payable to you is not less than EUR 50. If this minimum amount is not reached in a particular period, Edit Genius is entitled to carry the amount due to you to the next period and so on until the minimum amount is reached.
• Currency and Taxes All payments are made in the European Union currency, the euro (EUR), converted to your local currency at the rate of the day. Payments are exclusive of customs duties and other taxes apart from UK VAT.

Copy-editing

Job Acquisition

Copy-editors acquire jobs on Edit Genius on a first-come, first-served basis. When a client sends a document to Edit Genius, they are prompted to choose a category for the type of text as well as to provide a short brief for the editor. All Edit Genius copy-editors can access this information and on the basis of it choose whether to accept the job.

Style Guides

All copy-editing must be done in accordance with Edit Genius’s style guides.

Editing Scope

Copy-editing of a client’s text includes checking the grammar (correction of all grammatical errors), spelling (correction of all spelling errors), punctuation (correction of all punctuation errors), consistency (imposing a consistent style), and textual structure (ensuring that the structure is well organized). Editing does not include development (any writing apart from ensuring consistent structure), rewriting, ghost-writing, or critique or evaluation of the text.

Delivery and Deadlines

All dates and times provided for the delivery of the document or text are approximate. Edit Genius cannot be held liable for any loss or damage caused by a later delivery time than the approximate one.

The Copy-editor’s Right to Refuse the Job

Upon acceptance of the text, you have the right to refuse the job if it doesn’t meet the standard that makes it possible for you to complete the job. This right also holds if, during a job, you discover that you cannot carry out the job to an acceptable standard for any reason. If you refuse the job, the client is notified via email, and the client’s payment is reimbursed.

The Edit Genius Editor’s Code of Ethics

Ethical Standards

Edit Genius editors adhere to a high ethical standard. That means they always strive to provide the highest standard of service, offering educated and well-considered edits and responding quickly, clearly, and courteously to client queries and concerns.

Job Acceptance and Competence

Edit Genius editors will only accept jobs they believe to be within their sphere of competence. If on closer examination an editor finds they do not have the skills or knowledge needed to complete a job to the highest standard, the editor will return the job or seek guidance.

Refusal of Offensive Material

An Edit Genius editor may refuse to edit material they find personally offensive for any reason. Once they have accepted a job, however, the editor must provide the highest level of service, regardless of their feelings about the ideas presented in the work. At no time will an Edit Genius editor insert their beliefs into the author’s work, by modifying text or through marginal comments, or offer commentary that is argumentative or denigrating to the work.

Prohibited Work

Some kinds of work are by nature outside our ethical code. Edit Genius editors will not:

• Provide content editing on university or school assignments, though they will happily provide a light-handed standard edit.
• Provide editing for materials that are clearly intended to be deceptive or fraudulent or that appear to be intended to support illegal activities.

Editors should report jobs that appear to fall into these categories to Edit Genius Support.

The Client’s Right to Refuse the Work

Evaluation Period

When copy-editing has been completed on a document, the client has three days from the next business day to evaluate, accept, or claim a re-edit.

Re-editing Process

If the client does not accept your work, they can claim a re-edit by you, stating explicit reasons for doing so. The client must have made no changes to the document and addressed all of your notes and comments.

Re-edit at No Extra Cost

If the text is sent back to you for re-editing, you will re-edit the text at no extra cost to the client.

Final Refusal

If the client does not accept the re-edited work done by you, Edit Genius will inform you of the client’s reasons for the refusal. If the client’s claim is legitimate and supported by substantive proof, the client’s payment will be reimbursed, and you will not receive any payment.

Confidentiality

Edit Genius acknowledges that copy-editors may be privy to confidential information in the form of sensitive or unpublished material. To ensure client confidentiality, all Edit Genius editors agree to work under a non-disclosure agreement by using the service. The non-disclosure agreement can be found in full in Edit Genius’s Privacy Policy.

Liability

Though we strive to provide an excellent service with an outstanding product, we will in no way be liable for any loss or damage, including, without limitation, indirect or consequential loss or damage, or any loss or damage whatsoever arising from loss of data or profits arising out of, or in connection with, the use of this website.

Every effort is made to keep the website up and running smoothly. However, Edit Genius takes no responsibility for, and will not be liable for, the website being temporarily unavailable due to technical issues beyond our control.
